“You look pretty today.” Cato told her. Even though she hadn’t dressed up at all and her hair wasn’t brushed, he thought she looked like an angel. Clove blushed, a rare occurrence, and shook her head. She smiled at him with an embarrassed smile, but her eyes shone with happiness. “No, really. You look wonderful.” He grinned at her shyness. 

“Shut up…” She mumbled through her smile. Her head leaned against his chest to hide her flushed face and she punched him lightly in the stomach. He laughed, then wrapped his arms around her and held her against him. 

“I’m serious, you look great.” He said after a few moments of silence. She smiled shyly and stood on her tip-toes to plant a thank you kiss on his cheek. This time, it was Cato who turned pink.

“Hey.” Clove walked up behind the boy and he spun around from surprise. He stared at her with his wide blue eyes with something Clove couldn’t recognized. It couldn’t be fear because Cato was never scared, right? 

His fear subsided to a worried smile and he nodded hello. “I’m glad you came.” His words made her eyes betray her confusion. Cato never said anything like that. In fact, he had been acting odd all day. It started with Cato smiling at her nonstop, then him asking if she would meet him later, and then he ignored her the rest of the day. It made her feel funny inside. 

“I, uh, wanted you to come ‘cause I needed to ask you something.” Cato’s gaze was on the ground, something Clove had never seen him do. She worried if something bad happened. She began to talk, but he blurted out, “Do you wanna go to prom with me?”

Clove was taken off guard and she stared at him. Then she nodded. And he grinned. And she grabbed him and they hugged and then he kissed her and it was wonderful. And their hearts were racing and neither of them had felt happier and it was all good in their lives.
